Top Ten Reasons to own the PS3
10 Home
Just kidding.
10 Backwards Compatibility
For those of us lucky to have the original 60 GB PS3s, we are blessed with backwards compatibility. It is hard to argue against the fact that the PS2 was a juggernaut in the history of gaming. Along with this fact comes all the great games that the PS2 produced. Now it is rumored that the next PSN update will include backwards compatibility and the PSN store will have PS2 titles for download. This is a fact that should keep gamers happy for years to come.
9 Blu-Ray
A 50 GB behemoth. Blu-Ray is the intermediate future between disc and digital distribution. Honestly the console makers are all dabbling with digital distribution, but it has a long way to go before becoming main stream. Enter Blu-Ray. For those of us lucky to also have Hi-Def TVs, you have to wonder how we lived before The Dark Knight in Hi-Def. Oh and the PS3 Blu-Ray player also enables viewers to participate in Blu-Ray Live, plus it updates itself through the PSN update.
8 Value
While the PS3 is the most expensive console on the market, it is also the most value orientated console. Does the 360 package in Wi-Fi, a free online experience or cheap ‘after-market’ products? (Think hard-drive here people.) I think not! Does the Wii offer any sort of Hi-Def movie player? Hell does it even offer a DVD player? Nope. If you include any of these features on the other guys, the PS3 becomes the better purchase.
7 Bluetooth
Speaking of value, let me introduce you to reason number seven to own a PS3. Bluetooth. I don’t have to purchase a crappy $50 mic, instead I can purchase whatever mic I want. High end, low end, it does not matter. Plus you have the ability to use a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, for surfing the net and playing Unreal Tournament. Now let’s see you surf the net with your 360. (Why the keyboard and mouse is supported by only one game, I don’t know. Hopefully this will be corrected in the future.)
6 Style
Now this is an utterly and completely matter of opinion. Don’t get me wrong, I like the ‘looks’ of the other guys. But it is hard to argue against the quality of look the PS3 brings to the table. If you are a techno geek, you will be proud to feature the elegance of the PS3 in your living room.
5 The PSP to PS3 connection
Maybe the PSP is irrelevant, maybe it is not. I happen to think there is still a future for that little guy. Sony has continually supported the PSP content through the PS3, and the future only looks brighter with the PSP GO. (Now if only Sony had put a damn second analog stick on the PSP, and allowed remote playing with every game. This would be arguably the best feature of the PS3.)
4 Media Center
Stream movies, music and pictures directly to your PS3. You will have to download a PS3 media server onto your PC, but once you do this works beautifully. In fact I prefer the PS3 media center to the Xbox 360. No need for codes or even having to have Microsoft products installed on your computer. Sony actually seems to embrace the freedom associated with this feature.
3 PSN Content
While Xbox Live is loaded with content, some of the quality is suspect. (With the Games on Demand this might change, only the future knows.) I will take quality over quantity any day. Flower, Fat Princess and all the Pixel Junk games round out games that are risk takers, and some of the best games around. Plus you get access to a huge number of movie downloads and rentals. Almost making the Xbox Live Netflix combo obsolete, almost.
2 PSN
Hello! I said Hello! Free online game play. What more could you ask? Oh and most of the PS3s exclusive shooters are hosted via a dedicated server. No more host lag or bullet lag. I am shamefully looking at you Gears of War. (Oh how I love you none the less.)
1 Games
Exclusives. That is where the console war is won and this is where Sony shines compared to their counterpart. (I do not include Nintendo in this, as I personally think the Wii is in a completely different market.) inFamous, Killzone 2, Resistance series, Ratchet and Clank series, LittleBigPlanet, METAL GEAR SOLID 4 and the upcoming God of War 3, Uncharted 2 and M.A.G. What more could a gamer ask for, besides high quality games that will keep them happy for years to come.
